Cultural Nationalism in Carlos Chávez’s Generation

The attached arti­cle is the text that I read at Bard Col­lege’s Sum­mer Music Fes­ti­val in 2015, which was ded­i­cat­ed to Car­los Chávez.  A Span­ish ver­sion of the text was includ­ed in my recent book of essays, La nación des­dibu­ja­da: Méx­i­co en trece ensayos (Edi­ciones Mal­pa­so, 2016).
